What is Special Monthly Compensation (SMC)?

Special Monthly Compensation (SMC) is a tax-free benefit paid in addition to regular VA disability compensation for veterans with severe disabilities or specific conditions that significantly impact their daily lives. SMC recognizes the extraordinary challenges faced by veterans with the most serious service-connected disabilities.

Unlike regular disability compensation, SMC is not based on a percentage rating but rather on specific qualifying conditions such as:

  • Loss of use or amputation of limbs
  • Blindness or severe vision impairment
  • Deafness or severe hearing loss
  • Need for aid and attendance for daily activities
  • Being housebound due to disabilities
  • Loss of reproductive organs
  • Severe facial disfigurement

SMC payments are in addition to your regular disability compensation and can significantly increase your monthly benefits. The amount varies depending on the specific type and severity of your qualifying conditions.

Different Levels of SMC

SMC has several different levels, each with specific eligibility criteria and payment amounts:

SMC-K (Loss of Use)

Eligibility: Loss of use of a hand, foot, or leg, or blindness in one eye with vision of 5/200 or less.

2025 Rate: $129.49 per month (in addition to regular compensation)

Examples: Veteran with severe arthritis preventing use of dominant hand, veteran with prosthetic leg, veteran with severe vision loss in one eye.

SMC-L (Higher Level)

Eligibility: Loss of use of both hands, both feet, one hand and one foot, or blindness in both eyes.

2025 Rate: $9,363.46 per month (replaces regular compensation if higher)

Examples: Double amputee, veteran with severe bilateral hand conditions, legally blind veteran.

SMC-M (Aid and Attendance)

Eligibility: Need for aid and attendance for daily activities like bathing, dressing, eating, or toileting.

2025 Rate: $2,431.66 per month (in addition to regular compensation)

Examples: Veteran requiring assistance with personal care, veteran with severe cognitive impairment, veteran with multiple severe disabilities.

SMC-N (Housebound)

Eligibility: Substantially confined to your home due to disabilities.

2025 Rate: $450.58 per month (in addition to regular compensation)

Examples: Veteran unable to leave home without assistance, veteran with severe mobility limitations, veteran with agoraphobia due to PTSD.

SMC-R (Multiple SMC Conditions)

Eligibility: Multiple qualifying SMC conditions that warrant higher compensation.

2025 Rate: Up to $12,419.39 per month (varies based on conditions)

Examples: Veteran with multiple amputations plus blindness, veteran requiring aid and attendance with multiple loss of use conditions.

Important: SMC levels can be combined in some cases, and the VA will pay the highest applicable rate. Some SMC payments replace regular compensation if they're higher, while others are paid in addition to regular compensation.
